Vox Arcana
I went to the Vox Arcana concert on Monday with Tim Daisy who we got to meet as part of our freshman fys class. I really enjoyed the concert. The played many new songs along with a couple they played last year and our freshman year. Even the songs I had heard before and very different twist this time around. Tim Daisy did amazing things with his percussions, his style is best described as organized chaos. The way he mixes the use drum sticks and different brushes along with pans creates an interesting combination of sounds. the large xylophone (not sure of the proper name) was very enjoyable, and added a new twist to their performance. He and the other musicians created many different sounds throughout their performances that I did not expect to hear from their instruments. Overall it was an excellent concert that left me feeling very Cageian afterward.

I love that too -that you can hear a piece that you know you've heard them play before, and yet it's different every time. I remembered their one piece "Silver Fence," and have heard it maybe three or four times, and I like it each time, but for different reasons. The dynamic fluidity of their work is so much fun! Of course, this does make it much more of a gamble to buy one of their CDs, because what you heard them play in person will not be the version of the piece that is on the CD. It's a toss-up whether or not you'll like it just as well... but even that degree of uncertainty is exciting, I think.
P.S. I'm horribly jealous that you got to go to the concert. I was stuck in an environmental geology class across the hall... but I did hear them for a few minutes when we took a break. And even Tim Daisy told me that environmental geology is important when I saw him afterwards...
